John Johnston was a man of many facets and impacted many parts of Ohio and America’s history. This tour will highlight the varied aspects of the man, his contributions, and the rich history of the place he and his family called home.

Tickets are available for the tours at $5.00 each and may be purchased at the Mainstreet Piqua office at 326 North Main.  The tours will be led by Piqua historian Jim Oda & Johnston Farm & Indian Agency director Andy Hite.  This project is sponsored by the Piqua Tourism Council with additional assistance from Mainstreet Piqua and the Piqua Public Library.

    The nineth season of the Piqua Community Farmers Market will get underway on Thursday, June 1 and in an effort to recruit additional vendors Mainstreet Piqua is hosting an Open House for potential market vendors on Thursday, April 6.  The open house will run from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Mainstreet Piqua office, 326 N. Main Street.  During the open house visitors and potential vendors will have a chance to ask questions about the Piqua Community Farmers Market and complete their applications.

    The 2017 market hours will be 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. each Thursday. The market will be held on High Street in front of the Piqua Public Library.

    During the open house market vendors will also get information on market readiness, marketing and receive promotional information about the Piqua Community Farmers Market.  The Piqua Community Farmers Market will run for 16-weeks through September 14.  Piqua Community Farmers Market rules and regulations, as well as an application form, can be found at the market website at www.piquafarmersmarket.com.  Questions about the market can be directed to Mainstreet Piqua at 773-9355.  All vendors at the Farmers Market, including last year’s vendors, are required to complete an application form and be formally approved to set up at the Piqua Community Farmers Market.

    The walking tour will explore the Hollow Park area and go into the history of the naturally spring fed Hollow Park swimming area and how the construction of Interstate 75 impacted the area.  The tour will include discussion of the park as it is today.  The tour will also visit the historic Jewish Cemetery site in the area. This tour will include a strenuous walk up the hill of the cemetery.

    The Johnston Farm cemetery is filled with members of the Johnston family and this tour will be a fascinating look at their family tragedies and the challenges of living in Ohio in the 1840s. You will be able to learn about the family, their role in Piqua’s development and how the cemetery is preserved today.  This tour will include lots of walking.
