Biggest Tomato Contest coming to the Piqua Farmers Market

The Piqua Community Farmers Market is on the lookout for the biggest tomato.  The market will be hosting its annual Biggest Tomato contest on Thursday, September 8 and prizes of $15 for first place, $10 for second place and $5 for third place will be awarded.  Tomatoes may be dropped off any time between the start of the market at 3 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Judging will commence at 5:15 p.m.

There is no fee to enter. Tomatoes will be judged by weight and may be red, green or any variation of ripeness in between — although contest organizers note that red tomatoes tend to weigh more due to their added moisture content.

The Biggest Tomato Contest is being held during the Piqua Community Farmers Market which is held each Thursday from 3 – 6 p.m. on High Street in front of the Fort Piqua Plaza in downtown Piqua.

The Piqua Farmers Market will run through the end of September and there is still plenty of produce and fresh vegetables available at the market. Although sweet corn season is starting to wind down there are tomatoes, eggplant, broccoli, carrots, green beans, peppers, okra and cucumbers available.  The market has four produce vendors at the market each week. There are also three vendors with baked goods and three vendors who have local honey.
